Arjuman has over six years association with the Project Thatta Kedona and NGO work in the village TGD. Arjuman has been regularly visiting TGD and reporting about NGO work and developments there in BBC Urdu broadcast. She had also visited and interviewed Dr. Senta Siller - the founder of the project - in the Pakistan House of that time in Potsdam and later in the Brandenburg Project in Gross-Behnitz.

Architecture students from Lahore on excursion trip to TGD

Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka, commonly called Dolls Village, has special attraction for all those who are interested in architecture and those who are interested in traditional housing. Thanks to the long standing experiences of the TTTC with simple technology and mud housing, combined with the cooperation with SPARC in Lahore that the common perception about local and environment friendly materials has undergone a fundamental change. Through the initiative IEC@BNU and through the FPAC Foundation, which publishes the quarterly magazine GREEN MAG, for the first time architecture students and professors have visited the project intentionally in order to acquaint themselves with the traditional mud architecture and how it exists in Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka. On their way to the village, between Lahore and Okara, the group also visited a Bio-Gas-Installation facility. Here are some images of the trip.

University of Punjab Students in Women Art Center

Professor Gwendolyn in Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka

On the weekend of 26th and 27th November 2011 I (Professor Gwendolyn from BNU) visited Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka together with my friends Mohammad Ali and Asma. The aim was to combine our general curiosity about the diverse activities that have been taking place in the village for almost two decades with our own research interests regarding the development of this community.

Ramla's Journey of Hope

I'm in Punjab. Making micro-documentaries. As part of the Hope Express project... which the team decided to convert into a short films/ mini documentaries project - rather than a train journey project. So I grabbed my brother's Sony Handycam, and decided to film whatever inspires me on an unplanned journey.
I went to PakPattan from Aug 3-6, returned to Lahore and stayed a night at the beautiful and gifted fashion entrepreneur Maria B's. Met S A J Shirazi, a traveler n prolific blogger/ writer.
He pointed me to Thatta Ghulam da Dheroka, where the Thatta Khedona brand hand dolls originate from. I let go of an obsession to 'go up North' and hopped on a car, bus, rickshaw, van and finally a taxi to get here yesterday.
Back to Lahore today and wondering what next? Don't want to stay in one place for too long! Hope to settle in a new place in Lahore or go elsewhere - I have a mental plan to return to Karachi by August 18. Let's see where Allah takes me next between today & then!
My wonderfully caring hosts at PakPattan (Dastgir of Sabri Langar Khana) and Lahore (Afia and family) have made an uncertain journey very comfortable!
Alhamdolillah!
I miss going North, but right now, carrying the message of a benevolent transformation across to people, while watching the Face of God wherever I turn, seem to take precedence as an intent!

Interaction with rural culture

Rural culture is an important attraction for urban folks. It is a great learning as well. On Mar 20, 2013, students from University of Punjab visited the Dolls Village and showed a keen interest in rural life. Mud House Owners Quality of Life Competition - 2012

Since 2000, Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka NGO (AFA) has been holding quality of life competition under the Preservation of Cultural Heritages Program where prizes are awarded to house owners for specially interesting details on mud buildings. This has been a great way to slow the spread of brick housing and also to retain the traditional housing to give the visitors an impression of life rural Punjab. The program was redesigned in 2009 and certain mud houses in the village were selected to receive financial help, through donations from friendly architects, for repairs after two extended monsoon rain periods. This year Professor Mansoor Durrani (from Punjab University) was the chief guest in the award ceremony. Here are the images from award ceremony this year.
