Thatta Kedona-Perzada Cultural Complex Cooperation

Thatta Kedona has a long-term cooperation with the Perzada Cultural Complex. Since many years, Thatta Kedona has been participating in the puppet festival in Gaddafi-Stadium with a special exhibition stand of ethnological dolls made by the AFA (NGO).

Puppeteers from Perzada Compex took part in the opening ceremony of the TTTC (Men-Centre) in 1997 in Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka. In 2010, three one-room houses made of traditional materials were constructed with the support of local universities for the purpose of research in connection with the mens’ project in TGD. In 2011, like previous year, a special event regarding appropriate technology was arranged for children. In 2012, the NGO AFA invited these children to a 3-school event, with school children from Lahore, Okara and TGD. Similar to the children’s festival at PCC, a 3-school festival has again taken place in 2013 in Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka.

Long live Thatta Kedona-Perzada Cultural Complex cooperation.

Volunteers in TGD

Globally acclaimed work of AFA – NGO in Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka – would not have been possible if it was not for the army of volunteers interested in good work from promotion and preservation of rural culture to the uplift and development of women folk in a village situated in the backwaters of Punjab, Pakistan. This can be said with certainty that no other village in entire Pakistan has seen so many volunteers from home as well as abroad.

Whereas local guests and students come to Dolls Village all around the year but western volunteers mostly come in winters (economy and the climate has special impact on work), mostly in spring time and autumn.

This October Monika Kuppler is again in Women Art Centre for pottery project and Marlis for Basic Health Unit. At the same time, Tikedar Iqbal from Harappa and wife are working on repair work and construction of a new kiln. Dr Norbert Pintsch is already in Pakistan working on so many new ideas and managing the affair.

Development in AFA

Pottery is one of the most sought after skill at Thatta Kedona. Pottery development with Monika Kuppler has a long history. This time TTTC (Men Centre) and WAC (Women Centre) are discussing to take pottery work to the next level. The new idea is to establish a second traditional kiln on the pump house plot, meanwhile for the electric kiln a generator has already been arranged. With the new kiln, Thatta Kedona Pottery Project has become independent from (uncertain) WAPDA energy supply that comes from main grid.

Perhaps next year another type of oven will be given a chance that all together will be a new experience for coming guests, specially for students coming from various universities in Lahore (for guidance and practice).

The same will be useful for the students of architecture.

In both the cases a new building is necessary, where SPARC, Lahore is also involved.

Students’ Visit

We have so many good traditions in TGD (one baby one tree, mud house competitions, distribution of books and more). One such tradition is visit of students from Lahore and other places. This year students from Lahore schools and Okara are coming to Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka on October 26, 2013. The NGO is arranging programs as well as displays and presentations. Such events are good for creating awareness and for cooperation between urban and rural life.

Quality of Life Competition 2013

Another beautiful tradition that is part of Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka life is quality of life competition held each year under the preservation of cultural heritages program since 2000 jointly by village NGO AFA, SPARC, FPAC and DGFK. Each year prizes are awarded to house owners for specially interesting details on mud buildings and taking good care of their own homes. This has been a great way to keep the environment of the village lively and traditional. The program was redesigned in 2009 and certain mud houses in the village were selected to receive financial help, through donations from friendly architects, for repairs after two extended monsoon rain periods. This year Professor Mansoor Durrani (from Punjab University) was the chief guest in the award ceremony. Here are the images from award ceremony this year:
