Family Welfare Middle School Students in the Village

Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka (Dolls’ Village) comes alive afresh when volunteers arrive there. Prof Dr Norbert Pintsch, Monika Kuppler and Marlis are in the village and so many things are happening simultaneously.

This has become a tradition that had students from different universities in Lahore (BNU, PU, UET, COMSAT, NCA, KC and PU) come to the village and show keen interest in local building constructions techniques, use of appropriate technology, village life and traditional rural culture and also interact with the villagers.

My first impression of Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka

Stephanie Walter

The plain of Punjab seems endless and from a distance village TGD looks like a little toy village made of clay bricks. As I enter the village I feel the pulse of life there; vibrant and lively. There is no hurry there. People live in peace and are happy at a slow pace. I could also see solar energy panels mounted on the building of Woman Art Center.

I am here in TGD to be with kids in the schools. On my way to school on the first day I am latterly surrounded (and escorted) by girls. As I enter the school for the first time, set of big, brown eyes look at me with curiosity and joy. I find the little school girls happy to find me among them. Their joy says welcome to me.

And so I am glad to teach English lessons and a bit of basic math to girls. I had brought magnetic letters and number from Germany and they are not only amazing for young girls but also a great help in teaching. The girls really love them.

As the school blackboards are not magnetic so we converted doors in to into blackboards. While I teach, I wonder how much potential these students have. They are so keen on learning. It is a sheer pleasure to be with such students. And the pleasure of being with little girls makes me forget my urban life.

Thatta Kedona Welcome Stephanie Walter

Stephanie Walter has master degree in Social Studies and Anthropology. She is in Pakistan for the first time. During her stay in Pakistan village, Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka (known as called Dolls Village), she is active in the government girls school for teaching English and playing with them.

Volunteers are a very helpful and welcome exposure for the students (also for people) to outside world. Lot of foreign experts and volenteers have been to the village over the past two decades. They bring along their own experience and expertise and everyone of them makes a different. You are welcome Stephanie Walter.

What I can learn from village girls

Stephanie Walter

My stay in Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka –  the Dolls Village - and close interaction with school girls there was a great experience; totally unforgettable. On my last day in the village girls school (a Friday), we started school at 8 Am and finished already at 12 AM. I notice that many of the girl students bring their little sisters and brothers with them.

On a Fridays the school seems more than a kindergarten than a school. But I note that the girls also concentrate on work like on other days. It amazed me how these little girls manage this. Interestingly, if a little sister or brother goes to the table of another others girl, she likes it as natural. I never saw that any little girl or boy getting lost. This was a perfect example of their social behavior. What is more, when one of them starts to cry and the sister does not see it, one of the other girls will look after and attend to the young one.

Girl students share their school stuff like rubbers, pencil, sharpeners and colored pencils with each other.

The school children in the village schools are treated for lice and other special insects once a year regularly.

The BHU is funded through donations. A Tambola event is organized annually to raise funds for supporting the work of the BHU.

A change is taking place due to the massive influence of industrially produced medicines; uncontrolled use of medicines is leading to various illnesses. The NGO has therefore decided to promote the use of traditional medicines (Moringa-tree, Neem Tree).

Monika Kuppler and Her Work

Volunteers are doing wonderful job passing skills to those who need it. It is like “repaying what I have been bestowed upon” said one of the volunteers who visited Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka.

Monika Kuppler (on the left in top image) has been passing along this the best way. She is very energetic and keen – working hard with local girls and women in Women’s Art Center Monika. Monika is here for the fourth time. She conducts pottery workshop with groups of women and starts every time where she had left the previous time. That has resulted in stream of new products and enhanced skills.

What is more, once she had brought her daughter Sophie Kuppler - another very bright student and volunteer who conducted English language classes). She has also conducted another workshop with paper.
