Success of NGOs due to Selflessness

An example of obviously excellent project work is the ThattaKedona project of the Anjuman-e-Falah-e-Aama in the village of Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroke in the district of Okara, Tehsil Gogera. The initiative began in the autumn of 1990 with a visit from Austrian graphic designer S.S. in the village.
The special thing about the project is that it is actually a self-help project, and that outside help was primarily selfless. In the daughter projects (see www. ...) of the ThattaKedona project, this peculiarity is also evident as well: The external participation depends upon whether something is drawn from a project, i.e. portion of the financial success. Comparisons with other projects show that volunteer can be found in projects, but they want (whether they have to, that is the crucial question) to be paid or financed . They give their time, but want to be rewarded! In the projects of S.S. The selflessness prevails, - which is the basis of long-term success. The local management of the NGO also does not live on the income, - a worldwide novelty and rarity in NGOs!

Upcycling project with AFWA in Bhara Kahu

Since the start of cooperation between AFA from Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka and AFWA from Bhara Kahu, volunteers have been bringing their experience and skills to AFWA. One of the hot idea is to create awareness about upcycling and to preserve nature.
This year Monika Kuppler, SES, after spending a week in TGD, has come to Bhara Kahu to start upcycling project with AFWA in Bhara Kahu. Farzana from WAC of AFA is also there.

Family Welfare Middle School Students in the Village

Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka (Dolls’ Village) comes alive afresh when volunteers arrive there. Prof Dr Norbert Pintsch, Monika Kuppler and Marlis are in the village and so many things are happening simultaneously.
This has become a tradition that had students from different universities in Lahore (BNU, PU, UET, COMSAT, NCA, KC and PU) come to the village and show keen interest in local building constructions techniques, use of appropriate technology, village life and traditional rural culture and also interact with the villagers.

Activities in Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka

Prof Dr Norbert Pintsch is back in the village for the fall. And there is a lot on his agenda.
He will work with various foundations to manage active support for the Village Project. Amjad Ali, too is in the loop for communication and information. Focus will be on Appropriate Technology in Okara District School.
By Sunday (Oct 18, 2015) two veteran German volunteers Marlies Bartkiewicz and Monika Kuppler will also be arriving in the Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka. Marlies will work with AFA (Anjuman-e-Falah-e-Aama) BHU to train village women and continue her work on herbal cream.
Monika will take her Handicraft, Pottery and Painting of Pottery in WAC to the next level. Similarly, Prof Amir Rafique will visit the village with students from Lahore.
Later, Monika, Marlies and Farzana will be in Bhara Kahu with AFWA (Al Firdous Welfare Association) where Marlies will check up kids and acquaint them with use of natural medicine and Monika along with Farzana will teach them Upcycling.

Dr Norbert Pintsch is arriving in Pakistan on October 1, 2014. He will be followed by other veteran volunteers.
Through October, Dr Norbert Pintsch will be busy in Lahore for Housing, Cooperation with Universities and General Communication and Information Skills with SPARC.
At the same time, Marlis will work on natural medicine (Moringa has grown fast) project in Basic Health Unit in Dolls Village (Thatta Ghulamka Dheroa) on the request of AFA, the village NGO.
Monika Kupler is also coming to the Village and she will work in Woman Art Center of AFA in pottery and handicraft section.
After heavy monsoon, programs includes a physical building check of the Woman Art Center building.
Students from Lahore are also expected to visit during the October activity season.

TGD Ceramics Group in Multan

A lot of work is being done on pottery development in TGD Women Art Center; new facilities, new designs and new products. Thanks to the ceramics passion of our veteran volunteer from Germany Monika Kuppler who has makes new innovation possible every time when she is in the Toy Village. Readers here know that Monika Kuppler is again in the Village for spring and she is doing a lot in the field of ceramics. Thatta Kedona readers also know that Women Art Center has installed a new local kiln for pottery firing and blazing.
On March 25, 2012, AFA – the village NGO - arranged a visit of Women Art Center Ceramics Group to Multan (city of saints famous for blue pottery, Kashi work and antiquity. Ceramics Group of Women Art Center spent a useful day in Multan visiting large ceramic workshops and handicraft centers in addition to site seeing in the historic city. Volunteers are doing wonderful job passing skills to those who need it. It is like “repaying what I have been bestowed upon” said one of the volunteers who visited Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka.
Monika Kuppler (on the left in top image) has been passing along this the best way. She is very energetic and keen – working hard with local girls and women in Women’s Art Center Monika. Monika is here for the fourth time. She conducts pottery workshop with groups of women and starts every time where she had left the previous time. That has resulted in stream of new products and enhanced skills. What is more, once she had brought her daughter Sophie Kuppler - another very bright student and volunteer who conducted English language classes). She has also conducted another workshop with paper.

Thatta Kedona-Perzada Cultural Complex Cooperation

Thatta Kedona has a long-term cooperation with the Perzada Cultural Complex. Since many years, Thatta Kedona has been participating in the puppet festival in Gaddafi-Stadium with a special exhibition stand of ethnological dolls made by the AFA (NGO).
Puppeteers from Perzada Compex took part in the opening ceremony of the TTTC (Men-Centre) in 1997 in Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka. In 2010, three one-room houses made of traditional materials were constructed with the support of local universities for the purpose of research in connection with the mens’ project in TGD. In 2011, like previous year, a special event regarding appropriate technology was arranged for children. In 2012, the NGO AFA invited these children to a 3-school event, with school children from Lahore, Okara and TGD.
Similar to the children’s festival at PCC, a 3-school festival has again taken place in 2013 in Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka.
Long live Thatta Kedona-Perzada Cultural Complex cooperation.

Volunteers in TGD

Globally acclaimed work of AFA – NGO in Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka – would not have been possible if it was not for the army of volunteers interested in good work from promotion and preservation of rural culture to the uplift and development of women folk in a village situated in the backwaters of Punjab, Pakistan. This can be said with certainty that no other village in entire Pakistan has seen so many volunteers from home as well as abroad.
Whereas local guests and students come to Dolls Village all around the year but western volunteers mostly come in winters (economy and the climate has special impact on work), mostly in spring time and autumn.
This October Monika Kuppler is again in Women Art Centre for pottery project and Marlis for Basic Health Unit. At the same time, Tikedar Iqbal from Harappa and wife are working on repair work and construction of a new kiln. Dr Norbert Pintsch is already in Pakistan working on so many new ideas and managing the affair.

Bazaar in Haus der Wirtschaft / Markt der Voelker

Bazaars always bring together volunteers, artists and so many others who are interested in cultural arts and there preservation and also help disseminate information. Lately, one bazaar was held in the City of Stuttgart on October 2-6, 2013. Dr Senta Siller, Monika Kuppler (volunteer from Women Centre Unit in TGD village), Marlis Bartkiewicz (volunteer from Basic Health Unit in TGD village) and Dr Norbert Pintsch participated and gave information about the NGO (Anjuman-e-Falah-e-Aama (NGO) in Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka) and its activities.

In addition to the famous Thatta Kedona dolls, samples from Mr Waseem’s Lacquer Work, Mr Aslam’s Block Printing,Mr Naqqash’s Camel Skin Painting and Mr Haq Nawaz’s stationary as well as some dolls from NGO (CAT) in Bamenda and Mr Basil’s Brass casting were also displayed.

Volunteers and spring come to the Village together

Thatta Kedona spring activities are picking up. Dr. Norbert Pintsch is in the village. Monika Kuppler in arriving in Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka where she will be busy with series of her pottery workshops.In addition to so many other things, flowers and decorative trees will be handed over to residents under ‘one baby one tree’ program, books will be distributed to students of schools in the village and mud houses' competition will also be held.
