Annual Distribution of Books in Village Schools 2016

Over quarter century ago, Senior German Volunteer Dr. Senta Siller had conceived and implemented the idea of giving books to the students of two government schools in Thatta Kedona Ghulamka Dheroka – the Dolls and Toy Village to promote education in rural community. At the start of academic session, AFA - the local NGO - distributes books (and stationary items) among the students of Government Girls Primary School as well as in Government Boys Primary School in the Village.

This tradition has become a milestone in the lives of students of both the schools and (as well as their parents). On the one hand, the students compete and wait for the Distribution of book and on the other, it takes away some of the financial burden from parents shoulders.

This year, Principal Mr Ashraf and Vice-Principal Mrs Sonia from The Valley of Knowledge School, Lahore along with 7 pupils, Ahmad Jalal from Kids Campus, Principal Mrs Rukhsana with 6 pupils from Okara and Head Master and teachers from boys and girls school in TGD and young students attended the event.

Have a look at these images and it will give you the feeler of the atmosphere and show the shine on the faces of students.

"AFA (NGO) takes keen interest in the education of the children in the Village," said Dr Norbert Pintsch, a senior German volunteer.

Distribution of Educational Material - 2015

Punjab village Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka has history. And its history really started when SES volunteer Dr Senta Siller and Prof Dr Norbert Pintsch first visited this village some 25 years ago.

Thanks to SES volunteers, two government schools (one for girls and the other for boys have progressed visibly. Where else young scholars like Stephanie Walter or Sophie Kuppler come and teach English, where else teachers from government schools are trained by the NGOs (AFA), where else annual sports days are celebrated?

Education is very close to the heart of Farooq Ahmad and Farana for AFA. One unique tradition of the NGO is to distribute books, school copies and other educational material among students right in the start of academic year.

On Friday,, March 27, 2015, stage was set book distribution to students of two government schools. This year the support came from FPAC and SPARC-project in Lahore and through students from Punjab University.

Students of both schools look forward to this event and come in their best dresses for the occasion.

My first impression of Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka

Stephanie Walter

The plain of Punjab seems endless and from a distance village TGD looks like a little toy village made of clay bricks. As I enter the village I feel the pulse of life there; vibrant and lively. There is no hurry there. People live in peace and are happy at a slow pace. I could also see solar energy panels mounted on the building of Woman Art Center.

I am here in TGD to be with kids in the schools. On my way to school on the first day I am latterly surrounded (and escorted) by girls. As I enter the school for the first time, set of big, brown eyes look at me with curiosity and joy. I find the little school girls happy to find me among them. Their joy says welcome to me.

And so I am glad to teach English lessons and a bit of basic math to girls. I had brought magnetic letters and number from Germany and they are not only amazing for young girls but also a great help in teaching. The girls really love them.

As the school blackboards are not magnetic so we converted doors in to into blackboards. While I teach, I wonder how much potential these students have. They are so keen on learning. It is a sheer pleasure to be with such students. And the pleasure of being with little girls makes me forget my urban life.

What I can learn from village girls

Stephanie Walter

My stay in Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka –  the Dolls Village - and close interaction with school girls there was a great experience; totally unforgettable. On my last day in the village girls school (a Friday), we started school at 8 Am and finished already at 12 AM. I notice that many of the girl students bring their little sisters and brothers with them.

On a Fridays the school seems more than a kindergarten than a school. But I note that the girls also concentrate on work like on other days. It amazed me how these little girls manage this. Interestingly, if a little sister or brother goes to the table of another others girl, she likes it as natural. I never saw that any little girl or boy getting lost. This was a perfect example of their social behavior. What is more, when one of them starts to cry and the sister does not see it, one of the other girls will look after and attend to the young one.

Girl students share their school stuff like rubbers, pencil, sharpeners and colored pencils with each other.

My name is 'yellow ball'

Stephanie Walter

As a part of TGD NGO education Program, I am teaching basic English lessons, numbers and a bit of math. In addition we practice together some of the most important phrases and sentences like “What is your name?" with the adequate answer "My name is Najma, Sakina (whatever is the name of the student). How old are you?" "I am (the age) years old!"

After the lessons, we also play together. The play reduces the strain and also helps learn. The favorite game is playing with the balls of different colors. We have a red, blue and yellow ball. One of the girls throws the balls in the ground and starts to say please, give me the red ball, please give me the blue ball, please give me the yellow ball. And sometime I get to hear so funny sentences like "My name is yellow ball."

I see the girls are very quick at the uptake. They learn fast. But sadly, they have no exposure to English language whatsoever. I wish they could have some English teacher and I can see they would have done wonders.

Thatta Kedona Summer School

Monika and Sophie

On June 21, 2008, the adventure of this year’s summer school started for three women from TGD, Shama Bibi, Sarvat Bibi, and Meraj Bibi and their teachers Monika (arts and handicrafts) and Sophie Kuppler (English). Unfortunately, in the last moment three of the originally six participants had to stay at home due to family problems. After 25 hours of sitting in the car they arrived at the guesthouse in Altit, Hunza where they stayed for 18 nights. The days were filled with learning English, enhancing handicraft skills, especially in pottery and doll making, cooking, and playing games.

For learning English the women were separated into two groups. One of them already knew some English and a school book was used to enhance her reading, speaking and writing skills. The other two women did never visit a school and thus never learned to read or write. In their lessons most weight was put on being able to communicate with the volunteers coming to teach handicrafts.
